Equalizer

The Denzel Washington-fueled action film “The Equalizer” took over the top spot among DVD rentals according to the latest figures released Monday by HomeMediaMagazine.com.

“The Equalizer,” which made over $100 million in the U.S. and another $90 million worldwide, wasn’t necessarily a surprise hit in theaters. So it’s no surprise that it’s no-nonsense-approach character and quality action sequences were apparently enough to woe people to give it a rent also.

“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” made the list for the first time at No. 2. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” which had been No. 1 the previous two weeks, fell to No. 5. “Guardians of the Galaxy” remained strong at No. 3 and “Let’s Be Cops” held No. 4 in its eighth week in the top 10.

The only new entry into the rental market, the horror “As Above, So Below,” came in at No. 12 on the rental list.

The new “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” appears to have more power as a DVD than it did at the box office, at least when it comes to staying No. 1.

For the second week in a row, “Turtles” outperformed the competition and stayed No. 1 among DVD rentals, according to Home Media Magazine, which charts the weekly numbers for sites such as IMDB.com. “Turtles” held off “Let’s Be Cops,” which moved from No. 4 to No. 2, and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which actually slipped from No. 2 to No. 3.

Rounding out the top 10 were newcomers “If I Stay,” “Dolphin Tale” and “Left Behind.” “The November Man,” with Pierce Brosnan, was the only newcomer to make the top 10 this week.

New films such as “The Equalizer” and “What If” will certainly shake up next week’s numbers.

The film also did the same when it first came out in theaters in August. However, “Guardians” moved back to the top after previously holding the spot and became the highest-grossing film of 2014.

“Into the Storm” moved into the top 10 and settled for third followed by “Let’s Be Cops,” last week’s No. 1, and “If I Stay,” another new entry.

“Let’s Be Cops,” the buddy comedy about two guys who dress up as cops and become neighborhood sensations, tops the DVD rental charts released this week by Home Media Magazine, which charts such numbers each week.

The film, which has a 6.6 rating on IMDB.com, was released on Nov. 11. Word of mouth along with its full saturation into Red Box helped in putting it on the top of the charts. The film was not initially released to Red Box until a few weeks later because of the rental policy it has with 20th Century Fox for all its films.

“Tammy,” last week’s No. 1, moved down to No. 2 while “How to Train Your Dragon 2” was third in its first week of full release. Guardians of the Galaxy, which was released onto DVD last Tuesday, didn’t come to Red Box until Friday, which caused it to pop up fourth. The film is currently the highest-selling DVD and Blu-Ray in the country.

NOTE: Last week’s numbers by Home Media Magazine were not released until last weekend for an undetermined reason. Below is the list for this week and the list for last week.
