The latest news coming out of the Sony hacks has Channing Tatum interested in a spinoff to the “Ghostbusters” franchise with Chris Pratt tagging along. And apparently Sony is in on the ride.

The Daily Beast reports Tatum sent an email to Sony’s Amy Pascal on Aug. 21 expressing his interest in making such a film.

From The Daily Beast:

Let us show the world The DarkSide and let us fight it with all the glory and epicness of a HUGE BATMAN BEGINS MOVIE. I know we can make this a huge franchise. Fun adventure craziness. COME OONNNN!!!”

The following day, Hannah Minghella, co-president of production for Columbia Pictures, sent Pascal and other Sony executives an email further explaining Tatum’s idea.

So… in a curious turn of events – the Russos and Channing want to develop Ghostbusters as a vehicle for Channing and Chris Pratt to do together. The Russos, Channing and Reid have been brainstorming ideas and want to create a whole new mythology that would support multiple movies (the way that Nolan reinvented Batman). To be clear – the Russos want to produce (not direct) and while Channing and Chris are looking for a movie to do together they haven’t mentioned this to him yet because they weren’t sure how we’d react. They want to make it simultaneously super scary while also super funny. They love the idea that they are mortal heroes who are believers in the paranormal and the only people who can defend mankind from a paranormal threat. I know we’re mid negotiations with Paul [Feig]. I’m not sure whether we’d ever develop two different versions simultaneously. Joe Russo is open to the idea that both movies could be developed in partnership so they compliment one another within the same Ghostbusters universe. Apparently the Russos are very close to Paul and Joe suggested Paul could be attached to direct both. Personally I think it’s possible for the female version to co-exist with this other version so maybe they’re not mutually exclusive.”

A new “Ghostbusters” with an all female cast has been buzzed about for weeks. Jennifer Lawrence, Melissa McCarthy, Emma Stone, Amy Schumer and Lizzy Caplan have been mentioned for the roles, among others.

One good thing about all of these Sony emails that were hacked … it makes for some very interesting stories.

Tuesday, we told you about how Sony was looking to farm out its rights to Spider-Man for Marvel to use in one of its “Avengers” films. Now, The Wall Street Journal reports that Sony is looking to combine the “Jump Street” and “Men in Black” franchises.

The only details revealed in the emails is that Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum would return as cops and interact in some way with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. Amy Pascal, Sony’s motion picture chief, wrote in the email “jump street merging with mib i think that’s clean and rad and powerful.” Hannah Minghella, a president of production for Sony’s Columbia Pictures studio wrote back “We don’t have a script yet so we’ll be greenlighting the movie off the concept and the talent involved.”

Sony is hoping to release the film in 2016 or 2017.

Andrew Gumpert, Sony Pictures president of worldwide business affairs and operations wrote an email to Stephen Spielberg’s attorney seeking to secure the filmmaker’s participation, since he was involved in “Men in Black 3.” His email read: “We didn’t do as well as we had hoped for on the last MIB film, but that hasn’t caused us to lose faith in the franchise. In reality, the exact opposite has occurred where we all have an opportunity to take an interim step on the way to hopefully forging ahead again in the pure-play MIB universe.”

The newspaper didn’t report on whether Spielberg gave a response.
