Michael Keaton seems to be up for a “Beetlejuice” sequel. So is director Tim Burton. Now, maybe even Winona Ryder.

While promoting his new film, “Big Eyes,” which hits theaters on Christmas, Burton hinted to MTV that Winona Ryder would also be interested in reprising her role in the comedy. MTV already has gotten the A-OK from Keaton back in February and Burton mentioned in October he was waiting on a script.

“Oh yeah,” Burton said, when MTV News asked if he’d be directing the sequel. When asked if Ryder would return for the sequel, Burton said “Oh yeah, yeah yeah yeah,” he said. “Oh yeah, oh yeah. Yeah yeah, oh yeah.”

Also from MTV:

Burton did say that working with Ryder on a recent video for The Killers helped influence his decision to return to the ghostly franchise.

“I worked with [Ryder], I hadn’t seen her in awhile… and she was so great,” Burton said. “I was so happy to see her. So those kinds of elements mean something to me. Michael, and her… and that character, I just miss it, there’s some freedom about that character that I love.”

In an interview with Yahoo! Movies, Burton said the current state of superhero movies is nowhere close to where it was when he directed “Batman” in 1989.

“Marvel, they have their thing and there’s a certain formula to it all which seems to still be working, but how many times can you say ‘you’re wearing a funny costume’ with the tights and stuff? That’s been going on for 20 years now. Yes, we all know that superheroes are damaged individuals. Maybe we need to see a happy superhero?”

Tim Burton feels that a cheerful superhero will totally change the genre of marvel. Michael Keaton’s Batman wasn’t a cheery individual, yet he is a ton happier than any present superhero today. Burton discusses his “Batman” film:

“I remember Batman getting so much flak and criticism at the time for being too dark and now 20-30 years later, it now looks like a light-hearted romp, it’s such a strange thing to go through.”

Burton believes a more positive superhero character or film could change the current state.

“I think there is another superhero film in me, but I don’t know. You think we need more superhero movies? It keeps on going. It’s amazing how long it’s been going for and it just keeps getting stronger and stronger. Some day people will get sick of it.”
